On Friday, the National People’s Congress (NPC) unanimously elected Xi Jinping to a third term as China’s president and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC). That decision was made by around 3,000 lawmakers who voted for the 69-year-old Chinese leader to serve as president from 2023 to 2028.

His re-election was made possible by the PNC, which passed constitutional reform in 2018 that removed a restriction on a president being allowed to serve only two consecutive terms.

Xi Jinping’s re-election as head of state for a five-year term in 1 comes after the Chinese leader managed in October to extend his tenure as head of the Communist Party and the army, the country’s two most important leadership posts.

Xi Jinping, the newly elected President of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and chairman of the PRC Central Military Commission, made a public pledge of allegiance to the constitution at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Friday.

Xi was born in Beijing in June 1953 and joined the Communist Party at the age of 22. He began to build his own network of supporters in the provinces until he was appointed governor of Fujian and then Communist Party secretary in Fujian and Shanghai.

In the late 2000s, Xi gained greater political prominence as the Communist Party began searching for a candidate with strong leadership to replace then-President Hu Jintao.

In 2012, Xi was elected secretary of the Communist Party and took over the presidency the following year with a promise to fight rampant corruption. Regarding the challenges Xi will face in the future, he warned that China will navigate “stormy seas” in the coming years and hinted at calls for maximum unity within the Communist Party.

In this regard, his main challenge is to face the incessant and growing tensions with the United States, particularly over the situation in Taiwan.
