Australia’s tennis world number 1 and Wimbledon champion Ash Barty was knocked out in the women’s singles first round of the Tokyo Olympics Sunday.
In the biggest shock of the Games so far, 48th-ranked Sorribes Tormo beat the world No 1 and newly crowned Wimbledon champion 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday.
World no. 48 Tormo, who is now through to the second round in the Olympics, has never progressed beyond the second round in a Grand Slam.
“It was a tough day, a disappointing day. I can’t lie about that. It was just loose,” Barty told the Seven Network.
