Geneva – The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed deep regret over the United States’ recent announcement of its intent to withdraw from the organization. This decision follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on his first day back in office, signaling a dramatic policy shift in global health collaboration.

In a statement released on January 21, 2025, WHO emphasized its crucial role in safeguarding global health and security, including benefiting Americans. The organization highlighted its contributions to detecting and responding to health emergencies in challenging environments, while addressing the root causes of disease and strengthening health systems worldwide.

The United States has been a founding member of the WHO since 1948 and has played a significant role in shaping the organization’s policies. Over the past seven decades, the partnership has achieved significant milestones, including the eradication of smallpox and near-eradication of polio.

“With the United States’ active participation in the World Health Assembly and Executive Board, WHO and the USA have saved countless lives and protected people from health threats,” the statement read. It also praised the U.S. for contributing to and benefiting from WHO reforms that have improved accountability, cost-effectiveness, and country-level impact over the past seven years.

The withdrawal has sparked widespread concern about its impact on global health programs, especially since the United States is one of WHO’s largest financial contributors. Global health experts fear this move could hinder initiatives like disease eradication, vaccine distribution, and emergency response efforts, potentially putting millions at risk.

WHO expressed hope for a reversal of the decision, stating, “We look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO for the benefit of health and well-being around the globe.”

Background on the U.S. Withdrawal

President Trump’s executive order follows a long-standing critique of WHO’s handling of global health crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Trump initially announced plans to withdraw from WHO during his first term but faced opposition and had the decision reversed under the Biden administration. His renewed decision to sever ties with WHO signals a prioritization of unilateral health strategies over multilateral cooperation.

With U.S. withdrawal taking effect within a year, the decision may significantly disrupt WHO’s financial and operational stability. International and domestic stakeholders are urging the U.S. administration to reconsider the decision, citing the critical need for global health solidarity.
