Washington, D.C. — On January 26, 2025, the White House announced that Colombia has agreed to President Trump’s terms regarding the deportation of Colombian nationals illegally residing in the United States. The agreement ensures Colombia’s unrestricted acceptance of all deported individuals from the U.S., including their transportation aboard U.S. military aircraft.

To incentivize compliance, the White House disclosed that previously drafted tariffs and sanctions under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) will remain on hold, conditional upon Colombia’s adherence to the agreement. However, existing visa sanctions and heightened inspections by Customs and Border Protection will stay in place until the successful return of the first planeload of deportees.

The administration emphasized that this step highlights America’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty. President Trump expects similar cooperation from other nations whose citizens are unlawfully present in the U.S., reaffirming his administration’s firm stance on immigration enforcement.

This development represents a significant shift in U.S.-Colombia relations and is expected to draw attention from international communities and advocacy groups.
