A small plane crashed in a residential neighborhood near San Diego on Monday afternoon, killing a pilot, cardiologist from Arizona, and a UPS driver on the ground.
The plane was headed to San Diego from Yuma, Arizona.
A video captured the moment showed a small plane in footage posted by KSWB-TV falling behind a house in a residential neighborhood, where it disappears from view before a cloud of smoke soon erupts.
Images from the scene showed a mangled UPS truck that was reportedly clipped by the aircraft’s wing as it came down, according to NBC San Diego.
The pilot was identified as Dr. Sugata Das, a cardiologist at Yuma Regional Medical Center in Arizona, according to NBC 7.
“We are deeply saddened to hear news of a plane owned by local cardiologist Dr. Sugata Das which crashed near Santee,” said Dr. Bharat Magu, chief medical officer at YRMC, told the news outlet.
UPS did not identify the driver, but said in a statement that the company was “heartbroken by the loss of our employee, and extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends,” the news outlet reported.
Santee Deputy Fire Chief Justin Matsushita told media outlets that two homes were decimated in the crash and multiple vehicles caught fire. The debris field stretched more than a block, he said, and power was cut to 10 homes while first responders combed through the wreckage.
Two people were injured and taken to local hospitals, Matsushita told outlets.
The cause of the crash was under investigation, authorities said.
