The terrorist attack in Kabul killed at least 60 people and 140 wounded, according to US media outlets including local Afghan media.

Twelve US troops were killed and 15 were injured in the twin attack at Kabul airport today, Gen. Kenneth “Frank” McKenzie, head of the US Central Command, said at a media briefing Wednesday.

Among those, 11 were Marines and one Navy medic troop, he said.

McKenzie said the attack included two suicide bombers followed by gunmen opening fire.

The US will continue the evacuation mission at Kabul airport despite attacks, McKenzie added.

The attack created a chaos at the airport. It came just hours after Western nations warned of an imminent terror threat. The blasts came close to the August 31 deadline for US troops’ withdrawal.

Emergency, an Italian charity that operates hospitals in Afghanistan, said:  “Our hospital in Kabul was already 80% full before the explosions. Now we added extra beds to admit wounded people coming from the airport in life-threatening conditions.”

In addition, Emergency said 10 people were dead when they arrived.

“Influx of patients is continuous. It hasn’t stopped so far. We received men, women, and children. They are all Afghan civilians, Emergency updated the status on Twitter.

The tragedy drew international attention and global leaders and their offices condemned the attack.
