A peacekeeper was injured last night when a patrol was attacked by a group of young men in Taybeh, south Lebanon, according to a statement released by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The attack also resulted in damage to a vehicle.
The statement condemned the attack, stating that such actions against individuals serving the cause of peace are not only reprehensible but also violate Resolution 1701 and Lebanese law.
UNIFIL emphasized the importance of peacekeepers’ freedom of movement in their efforts to restore security and stability along the Blue Line, a border demarcation between Lebanon and Israel established by the UN.
The organization has called on Lebanese authorities to conduct a comprehensive and swift investigation into the incident and ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice. Despite the attack, UNIFIL affirmed that their peacekeepers remain committed to their duties and will continue their crucial work of monitoring and de-escalation.
UNIFIL was set up in 1978 to monitor the withdrawal of Israeli forces after they invaded Lebanon in reprisal for a Palestinian attack. It was bolstered after the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006, and its roughly 10,000 peacekeepers are tasked with monitoring the ceasefire between the two sides.
