On Thursday, Unicef expressed its concern regarding the Taliban government’s alleged ban on international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) providing education to Afghan children who are currently out of school. This ban puts the education of approximately half a million boys and girls at risk.

The UN agency stated that it is actively seeking more information regarding reports that the authorities are opposed to foreign organizations directly engaging in the education sector.

Since assuming power almost two years ago, the Taliban has already barred girls and women from attending secondary schools and universities.

Unicef released a statement expressing deep concern about the potential consequences of this ban, highlighting that over 500,000 children, including more than 300,000 girls, may lose access to quality education through Community Based Education within a month if international NGOs working in the education field are no longer permitted to operate.

The agency emphasized its commitment to understanding the reported directive, as the Taliban leaders have not made any public statements regarding this matter thus far.
