Early Sunday morning, a 50-story building in the IQ-quarter complex of Moscow was targeted in an alleged drone attack, according to reports from the city’s mayor and Russian media. Footage from the scene showed smoke billowing from the damaged building, sparking immediate concern.
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that the attack involved Ukrainian drones. They stated that Russian air defenses successfully shot down one of the drones to the west of Moscow. Additionally, two other drones were reportedly jammed by electromagnetic warfare systems, causing them to crash in Moscow.
This incident marks the latest in a series of drone assaults in the region, including previous attacks on the Kremlin and Russian towns near the Ukraine border. Moscow has consistently placed the blame for these attacks on Kyiv, further escalating tensions between the two countries.
The Russian Defense Ministry labeled the incident as an “attempted terrorist attack” orchestrated by the “Kyiv regime,” according to their statement on Telegram.
The attack resulted in minor damage to the facades of two office buildings, and unfortunately, a security guard was injured at the OKO tower near the IQ-quarter complex, as reported by TASS.
In response to the security threat, authorities swiftly implemented a temporary restriction on aircraft in the airspace above Moscow. Vnukovo International Airport was also temporarily shut down for arrivals and departures, the TASS news agencies reported.
This attack marks the fourth attempt at striking the capital region this month and the third this week alone. These repeated incidents have raised concerns about Moscow’s vulnerability to such attacks as the ongoing war in Ukraine enters its 18th month.
