In a daring attack, the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a missile strike on the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the occupied city of Sevastopol on Wednesday, killing at least nine people and injuring 16 others, including high-ranking Russian generals, according to the Voice of America.
Among the wounded is the commander of a group of Russian forces in the Zaporozhye region, Colonel-General Oleksandr Romanchuk, who is in a very serious condition, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, told the Voice of America in an exclusive interview. The Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Oleg Tsekov, is unconscious. The number of injured regular servicemen who are not employees of the headquarters is still being determined.
Budanov did not confirm reports about the alleged death of the commander of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation, Admiral Viktor Sokolov. There is currently no information about his condition in the GUR.
The attack was carried out with precision-guided missiles that hit several targets in Sevastopol, causing explosions and fires. The Russian occupation authorities reported that the attack was a “provocation” and a “violation of international law”. They also claimed that they shot down some of the missiles and inflicted “significant losses” on the Ukrainian side.
However, Budanov denied that any Ukrainian aircraft or drones were involved in the attack. He also refused to comment on whether Western-made missiles were used, saying that he had to refrain from answering for security reasons.
Budanov also hinted that the attack was planned with the help of local sources, including partisans and residents who oppose the Russian occupation. He said that intelligence is collecting data from all sources and that agency sources are one of the main ones.
The attack on the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet is a major escalation in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia over Crimea and Donbas. It comes amid increased diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful solution to the crisis, which has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions of people since 2014.
