Two ships, one departing from Ukraine and the other from Russia, collided in the Marmara Sea near the picturesque Marmara Island of Balikesir province, Türkiye, as reported by local media.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, was reported by the Haberturk Daily, quoting the General Directorate of Coastal Safety. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported in the wake of this maritime mishap, but both vessels have suffered significant damage.

The vessels involved in the incident were identified as the “Haje Halimeh,” a 130-meter-long dry cargo ship loaded with wheat, and the “Asomatos,” a 169-meter-long bulk carrier laden with grain.

The “Haje Halimeh” embarked on its journey from the Ukrainian port of Izmail with its destination set for Valencia, Spain. Meanwhile, the “Asomatos” was en route from the Russian port of Kavkaz to Ashdod in Israel, carrying its precious cargo.

These ships, which operate under different flags, were identified by Marine Traffic, an online vessel tracking platform. The “Haje Halimeh” sailed under the flag of Comoros, while the “Asomatos” displayed the Panama flag.

The collision took place in the waters near Marmara Island, highlighting the need for enhanced maritime safety measures in this region. The exact circumstances leading to the accident are currently under investigation by the relevant authorities.

Türkiye, with its strategic location as a crossroads between Europe and Asia, is no stranger to maritime traffic. The Marmara Sea, situated between the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea, sees a significant amount of shipping activity on a daily basis. Ensuring the safety of these waters is of utmost importance to prevent such incidents in the future.

The General Directorate of Coastal Safety confirmed the incident and reported that there were no casualties. The extent of the damage to both ships is currently being assessed.

As this story unfolds, local authorities and maritime experts are closely monitoring the situation. Both ships are expected to undergo repairs, and the damaged cargo will need to be assessed.

Marine Traffic, an online vessel tracking platform, revealed that Haje Halimeh was sailing under the flag of Comoros, while Asomatos was registered under the Panama flag.

Further details about the incident are awaited as investigations continue.
