Jake Sullivan, the National Security Advisor, confirmed that U.S. officials have secured the return of Private Travis King from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).  Following extensive diplomatic efforts and international cooperation, Private Travis King, an American soldier, has finally been freed after being held captive in North Korea for over two months.

In an official statement, Sullivan expressed gratitude, stating, “We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the interagency team for their unwavering commitment to the well-being of Private King.”

Furthermore, the message acknowledged the significant diplomatic roles played by the government of Sweden as the protecting power for the United States in the DPRK and the government of the People’s Republic of China for their invaluable assistance in arranging Private King’s transit.

Private King, who crossed into North Korea while on patrol near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on July 18, was received by U.S. officials after being transferred to China, the Defense Department press secretary, Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, said in a statement

Before crossing the border, King had faced disciplinary action while stationed in South Korea and had served time in a correctional facility.

At the time of his crossing, he was scheduled to fly to the U.S. to face additional administrative action by the U.S. Army.

Officials said King’s administrative status would be addressed following his successful reintegration.

“Our focus within the military at this point is really caring for Pvt. King and his family,” a senior official said.

One crucial aspect of this successful mission was the diplomatic role played by the government of Sweden, which acted as the protecting power for the United States in the DPRK. This diplomatic channel allowed for crucial communication and negotiations to take place.

Additionally, the government of the People’s Republic of China played a vital role in facilitating the transit of Private King, ensuring his safe passage back to the United States. Private Travis King’s return is a testament to the importance of international diplomacy and cooperation in resolving complex and sensitive situations. It underscores the commitment of the U.S. government to protect the rights and safety of its citizens, no matter where they may find themselves.

King, who crossed into North Korea on August 15 while stationed in South Korea, was flown in on a US military flight, landing at Kelly Field at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston around 1:30 a.m. ET, a Defense Department official said.

The Defense Department official said King was in good health and would undergo medical and psychological evaluations before being debriefed by military intelligence.

The official said the circumstances of King’s crossing into North Korea were still under investigation, but that he appeared to have acted on his own and without authorization.

The official said King was captured by North Korean soldiers shortly after crossing the border and was held in a prison camp for several weeks. He was subjected to interrogation and torture, but managed to escape on September 24 with the help of a sympathetic guard.

He then made contact with the US Embassy in Beijing, which arranged for his transfer to American custody.

The official said the US government did not pay any ransom or make any concessions to North Korea for King’s release.

There is not much information about what Private King went through and how he got out, but his safe return to American soil is a reason to celebrate and be happy for his family, friends, and the whole country.
