The United States has launched an airstrike against an ISIS-K planner in Afghanistan, a spokesman for US Central Command announced Friday evening.

“U.S. military forces conducted an over-the-horizon counterterrorism operation today against an ISIS-K planner,” CENTCOM spokesman Capt. Bill Urban said in a statement.

“The unmanned airstrike occurred in the Nangahar Province of Afghanistan. Initial indications are that we killed the target. We know of no civilian casualties,” “U.S. military forces conducted an over-the-horizon counterterrorism operation today against an ISIS-K planner,” Capt. Bill Urban added in the statement.

The announcement was reported by the Associated Press.

The announcement of the strike came 48 hours after a terrorist attack that killed 13 US service members and at least 170 others outside Kabul airport.

Earlier Friday evening, the U.S. Embassy in Kabul sent out an alert telling people to stay away from the Kabul airport due to “security threats,” adding that those at four of the airport’s gates should “leave immediately.”

“Because of security threats at the Kabul airport, we continue to advise U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to the airport and to avoid airport gates,” the embassy wrote on its website. “U.S. citizens who are at the Abbey gate, East gate, North gate or the New Ministry of Interior gate now should leave immediately.”

Thursday was the deadliest day for American forces in Afghanistan since August 2011.

Speaking with emotion from the White House on Thursday, President Biden vowed to avenge the fallen soldiers, who he said were engaged “in a dangerous mission to save the lives of others”.  He said that the United States will “hunt down” the attackers and “make them pay.”
