In a recent statement released by the Central Command, it was reported that an anti-ship cruise missile was launched from Houthi militant areas in Yemen towards the USS Laboon (DDG 58), a U.S. Navy destroyer operating in the Southern Red Sea. The incident occurred on January 14 at approximately 4:45 p.m. Sanaa time.

The missile, believed to be backed by Iran, was successfully intercepted and destroyed in the vicinity of the coast of Hudaydah by U.S. fighter aircraft. The swift response ensured the safety of the USS Laboon and its crew, with no injuries or damage reported.

The USS Laboon, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, was conducting routine operations in the Southern Red Sea when the incident occurred. The ship’s advanced defense systems, coupled with the quick action of the U.S. fighter aircraft, neutralized the threat effectively.

The Houthi militants, who control a significant portion of Yemen, have been involved in a protracted conflict with a Saudi-led coalition since 2015. The group is known to have launched similar attacks in the past, often targeting Saudi Arabia.

The U.S. Central Command has not provided further details about the incident. However, this event underscores the ongoing tension in the region and the continued threats faced by naval vessels operating in these waters.

The U.S. Navy continues to maintain a strong presence in the region, ensuring the free flow of commerce through these critical waterways and standing ready to respond to any threats to international peace and security.
