Two rockets were fired towards the Green Zone where the US embassy is located in Baghdad on Saturday night, according to Iraq’s Security Media Cell.
One rocket was destroyed in the air by the C-RAM defense system and the other landed near a national monument and damaged two cars, the military said in a statement on Sunday.
Iraq’s Security Media Cell tweeted (google translate in English): “The Green Zone in Baghdad was bombed by two Katyusha rockets, the first was detonated in the air by the Seram system, and the second fell near the celebrations square, causing damage to two civilian vehicles.”
“The security forces began an investigation process and locate the launch site,” the statement added.
No group has yet taken responsibility for the rocket attack.
According to the Jerusalem Post, Iran-backed militias in Iraq have threatened to attack U.S. troops if they remain in Iraq after Dec. 31.
