    Pope Francis, Pope of the Vatican, renewed his call on the international community to provide urgent assistance to those affected by the devastating earthquake that hit Syria on Monday.

    The Vatican News Agency reported that Pope Francis, in his weekly homily, expressed his solidarity with the families of the victims who lost their lives in this devastating catastrophe, and appealed to the international community to express solidarity and provide urgent assistance to Syria, which has been suffering a long war.

    On Tuesday Pope Francis expressed his deep sorrow over the devastating earthquake that hit Syria, causing heavy losses in lives and property. He offered his condolences to the Syrian people and affirmed his support for all those affected and his solidarity with the long-suffering Syrian people.

     Death toll exceeds 11,000

    The combined death toll in the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked Turkey and Syria on Monday surpassed 11,000, with more fatalities expected to be reported in the coming days.

    Two earthquakes struck southeastern Turkey early on Monday, devastating wide areas in the country and in neighboring Syria. The quake toppled hundreds of buildings and killed thousands of people.
