President- elects Donald Trump recently took to Truth Social to announce a special initiative by the Republican Party to end Daylight Saving Time (DST). Trump described DST as “inconvenient” and “extremely costly” for the nation, urging action against it.

“The Republican Party will make every effort to end Daylight Saving Time,” Trump wrote. He added, “It has a small but strong supporter base, but it shouldn’t be.”

This comment came as Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, newly appointed leaders of the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), called for the abolition of DST. DOGE is a proposed initiative by the Trump administration focused on streamlining and making government processes more efficient.

    Support from Musk and Ramaswamy

Musk and Ramaswamy argued that DST disrupts sleep schedules, affects productivity, and creates small but significant problems for the economy. Ramaswamy stated, “The costs of maintaining this outdated practice outweigh the benefits. It’s time for the government to adopt a modern and efficient approach.”

    The Daylight Saving Time Debate

Daylight Saving Time was implemented during World War I to save energy, with the idea of making better use of daylight during the summer months. However, critics argue that it no longer provides any substantial benefits and only causes inconvenience for businesses, schools, and individuals.

Supporters of DST claim that it provides more daylight in the evenings, aiding outdoor activities and helping to reduce crime rates to some extent.

    Political Strategy?

Trump’s move against DST could be a strategy to attract voters dissatisfied with cumbersome government processes. Collaborating with high-profile figures like Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy has helped highlight Trump’s campaign themes of simplicity and innovation.

However, the proposal to abolish DST will face challenges in Congress. Although the Sunshine Protection Act was unanimously passed by the U.S. Senate, it stalled in the House of Representatives.

It remains unclear whether Trump’s effort to end DST will result in concrete legal outcomes. Nonetheless, this move has brought the old tradition back into the center of debate.
