President Donald Trump on Wednesday issued a fiery rebuke of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s comments about Crimea, warning that such “inflammatory statements” could derail ongoing peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump took direct aim at Zelenskyy’s recent interview featured on the front page of The Wall Street Journal, in which the Ukrainian leader firmly declared, “Ukraine will not legally recognize the occupation of Crimea. There’s nothing to talk about here.”

Trump called the remark “very harmful” to peace efforts and argued that Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014 during President Barack Obama’s administration, is a settled issue that should no longer be part of the negotiation framework.

“Crimea was lost years ago under the auspices of President Barack Hussein Obama, and is not even a point of discussion,” Trump wrote. “Nobody is asking Zelenskyy to recognize Crimea as Russian Territory but, if he wants Crimea, why didn’t they fight for it eleven years ago when it was handed over to Russia without a shot being fired?”

He further pointed out that Crimea, long home to major Russian submarine bases, was essentially a military stronghold of Russia even before the 2014 annexation. Trump warned that such rhetoric by Zelenskyy risks prolonging the conflict and undermines hopes for a negotiated resolution.

“It’s inflammatory statements like Zelenskyy’s that makes it so difficult to settle this War,” he wrote. “He has nothing to boast about!”

Trump, who has positioned himself as a would-be mediator in the war, emphasized that Ukraine is facing a critical choice: continue fighting a costly war or move toward a peace settlement. He claimed that the human toll — an estimated 5,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers dying each week — is too high to ignore.

“He can have Peace or, he can fight for another three years before losing the whole Country,” Trump warned. “I have nothing to do with Russia, but have much to do with wanting to save… soldiers who are dying for no reason whatsoever.”

He concluded his post with a call for urgency and a jab at Zelenskyy’s negotiating leverage.

“We are very close to a Deal, but the man with ‘no cards to play’ should now, finally, GET IT DONE,” Trump wrote. “I look forward to being able to help Ukraine, and Russia, get out of this Complete and Total MESS, that would have never started if I were President!”

Trump’s remarks come amid heightened efforts by international mediators to broker a ceasefire between the warring nations. While the White House has not yet commented on Zelenskyy’s statement or Trump’s reaction, analysts say the sharp tone underscores the fragile state of the peace process — and Trump’s increasing desire to shape its outcome.
