President Donald Trump’s administration has ramped up immigration enforcement by using military planes to deport migrants to Central America and announcing 538 arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in a single day, according to AP News. Trump also deployed U.S. soldiers and Marines to the U.S.-Mexico border and removed restrictions on immigration enforcement near schools and churches, the agency reported .

The news agency noted that many of ICE’s actions are not entirely unprecedented. Similar deportation flights took place during the Biden administration, though without the use of military planes. ICE averaged 311 daily arrests during the fiscal year ending September 30, 2023. President Joe Biden also sent active-duty troops to the border in 2023, and several prior administrations deployed National Guard troops to assist Customs and Border Protection, according to AP News.

ICE’s intensified efforts have resulted in the detention of more than 500 individuals across the United States, focusing on those with violent criminal records. In Mississippi, ICE agents arrested 20 undocumented immigrants shortly after Trump’s mass deportation plan was announced. These individuals are currently being held at the Madison County Detention Center, according to USA Today.

Trump’s recent executive orders have also sparked legal challenges. Immigration advocacy groups have filed lawsuits against the termination of the CBP One app, which allowed migrants to schedule border appointments. Additionally, Trump’s order to end birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented parents has faced immediate legal opposition, according to PolitiFact.

These developments have created fear and uncertainty among immigrant communities. While the Trump administration claims the measures prioritize national security, immigrant advocacy groups argue they unfairly target vulnerable populations. The legal battles are expected to continue as the administration’s policies are implemented, according to NBC New York.
