Three police officers were attacked by a man with a machete just blocks away from Times Square during New Year’s Eve celebrations in New York City.

The New York police said the suspect was shot in the shoulder by one of the officers.

The suspect is a 19-year-old man who has not been identified yet.

According to the NPPD, the attack happened a little after 9:30 pm on Saturday night, just hours before the ball dropped.

New York’s mayor Eric Adam, New York City Police Department’s (NYPD) Commissioner Keechant Sewell and other officials held a press conference on Sunday giving details about the attack.

The suspect came to New Year’s Eve in NYC from Maine, and federal and local law enforcement officials are now starting to look through online postings that preliminarily indicate recent extremist Islamic radicalization, ABC News reported quoting the law enforcement sources as saying.

    His motive remains under investigation.
