Thousands of dangerous gang members have been transferred to El Salvador’s new “mega-prison” known as the Center for the Control of Terrorism (CECOT). About 2,000 gang members have been moved to the 40,000-capacity prison, which is now considered the largest prison in the region.

President Nayib Bukele wrote on Twitter, “This will be their new house, where they will live for decades, mixed up, unable to do any more harm to the population.”

In a video posted by President Bukele, prisoners wearing white shorts, shaved heads and tattooed bodies are seen running.

Vice President Bukele tweeted that the first 2,000 of the country’s most dangerous gang members have been transferred to El Salvador’s largest prison, the Center for the Control of Terrorism (CECOT). There are 40,000 gang members in the jail who have been arrested before.

How is the new ‘Mega Jail’?
The procedure was carried out in a mega-operation never seen before in the country. The mega-prison has state-of-the-art technology, where every terrorist who enters is strictly controlled from the start with the aim of verifying it, according to the local media La Capital.

Upon arrival at the prison, inmates pass an X-ray machine, where they will be checked for hidden items, then they will be transferred to the registration area where their identity will be verified.

The prison has isolation cells that are dark. This cell houses misbehaving inmates including gang leaders.

The prison has four electrified walls, the first of which is 11 meters high. Built under international prison standards and certifications, this prison is equipped with a round-the-clock video surveillance system to ensure that inmates cannot escape. All the activities of the inmates are monitored through this.
