In a dramatic turn of events, the House of Representatives voted to censure Rep. Al Green (D-TX) after he was removed from President Donald Trump’s address to Congress. The vote, which saw ten Democrats joining their Republican colleagues, was a response to Green’s disruptive behavior during the President’s speech.

The resolution, passed with a vote of 224-198, described Green’s actions as a “breach of proper conduct” and cited his repeated interruptions during the address. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) ordered Green’s removal from the chamber after he refused to cease his outbursts.

Green, known for his outspoken progressive stance, defended his actions, stating that he was standing up against the President’s proposed cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. “I’ll accept the punishment,” Green told reporters. “It’s worth it to let people know that there’s some of us who are going to stand up against this president’s desire to cut essential programs”.

In a post on X, House Speaker Mike Johnson wrote: “Rep. Al Green’s shameful and egregious behavior during President Trump’s Joint Address disgraced the institution of Congress and the constituents he serves. Despite my repeated warnings, he refused to cease his antics and I was forced to remove him from the chamber. He deliberately violated House rules, and an expeditious vote of censure is an appropriate remedy. Any Democrat who is concerned about regaining the trust and respect of the American people should join House Republicans in this effort.”

In a surprising and somewhat theatrical response, House Democrats broke into song following the vote. The impromptu performance was a show of solidarity with Green and a protest against the censure.

The censure resolution was introduced by Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA), who emphasized the importance of decorum and order in the House. “Decorum and order are the institutional grounds for the way we do business in the United States Congress, and the sheer disregard for that standard during President Trump’s address by the gentleman from Texas is unacceptable,” Newhouse stated.

This incident marks the latest in a series of contentious interactions between the President and members of Congress, highlighting the deep divisions within the legislative body.
