In a significant development following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent visit to the White House, the United States and Ukraine are reportedly close to reaching an agreement on a mineral deal. This deal is seen as a crucial step in securing continued American support in Ukraine’s ongoing war against Russia.

Negotiations and Proposal

During the discussions, President Donald Trump proposed that Ukraine grant the U.S. ownership of half of its mineral resources in exchange for continued military and economic assistance. This proposal, initially rejected by President Zelenskyy, has now gained traction, with both countries nearing an agreement.

According to a report by The New York Times, Trump stated that the deal would bring billions of dollars to the U.S. and help secure Ukraine’s future. “We are close to an agreement,” Trump said. “This deal will bring $500 billion to America. It will be finalized soon.”

Resistance and Diplomatic Efforts

The proposal initially faced resistance from Zelenskyy, who consulted with European allies before responding. During the Munich Security Conference, Zelenskyy expressed concerns about accepting the proposal without guarantees for Kyiv’s security. However, pressure from European leaders and the potential benefits of the deal have led to a change in stance.

Trump’s Treasury Secretary, Scott Besant, presented the proposal during a visit to Kyiv, where Zelenskyy indicated he would discuss it with European allies before making a decision. The deal’s draft is currently being finalized, with hopes that it will reduce tensions between the two countries.

“This agreement will strengthen the relationship between our nations. The draft must be carefully crafted to ensure it works effectively,” Zelenskyy stated.

Controversy and Strategic Importance

The mineral deal has sparked controversy, with Trump accusing Zelenskyy of starting the war and European leaders expressing concerns about the U.S. potentially siding with Russia. Despite these challenges, the deal is seen as a strategic move to secure rare minerals essential for modern technology, which are currently supplied mainly by China.

As the negotiations continue, the world watches closely to see how this agreement will impact the ongoing conflict and the future of U.S.-Ukraine relations.

On January 19, 2025, President Donald Trump made headlines with a scathing post on his Truth Social platform, targeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In the post, Trump called Zelenskyy a “dictator” and accused him of failing to resolve the ongoing war with Russia.

Trump’s Accusations

President Trump, who recently took office after winning the 2024 election, criticized Zelenskyy for persuading the U.S. to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on what he described as an unnecessary conflict. Trump accused the Ukrainian president of ineffective leadership, claiming that it led to unnecessary loss of life and turmoil in the country.

Trump’s Truth Social post included strong words:

“Think of it, a modestly successful comedian, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, talked the United States of America into spending $350 Billion Dollars, to go into a War that couldn’t be won, that never had to start, but a War that he, without the U.S. and ‘TRUMP,’ will never be able to settle. … A Dictator without Elections, Zelenskyy better move fast or he is not going to have a Country left.”

These remarks have ignited international debate, raising questions about U.S. foreign policy under Trump’s administration and his stance on the Russia-Ukraine war.

Zelenskyy’s Firm Response

In response to Trump’s accusations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy firmly rejected the claims, stating that he would not allow “anyone making decisions behind our backs.” Zelenskyy emphasized that his decision to postpone elections was due to the significant security risks posed by the ongoing war. He reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to sovereignty and democratic principles despite the challenges.

Support from the UK

Amidst the escalating diplomatic tensions, the UK Prime Minister released a statement on February 19, supporting President Zelenskyy’s leadership and justifying his decision to suspend elections during wartime. The statement read:

“The Prime Minister spoke to President Zelenskyy this evening and stressed the need for everyone to work together. The Prime Minister expressed his support for President Zelenskyy as Ukraine’s democratically elected leader and said that it was perfectly reasonable to suspend elections during war time as the UK did during World War II.”

The UK Prime Minister also reiterated support for U.S.-led peace efforts in Ukraine, highlighting the importance of achieving a lasting peace that would deter future Russian aggression.

International Reactions and Political Implications

Trump’s harsh criticism of Zelenskyy and his characterization of the Ukrainian leader as a “dictator” have drawn mixed reactions internationally. European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, have reaffirmed their support for Zelenskyy, underscoring his role as a democratically elected leader facing an existential threat to his nation.

In the United States, Trump’s comments have sparked debate among lawmakers, with some Republicans supporting his stance on reducing U.S. involvement in Ukraine, while Democrats and foreign policy experts criticize his approach as undermining U.S. alliances and weakening NATO’s resolve against Russian aggression.

Impact on U.S.-Ukraine Relations

The fallout from Trump’s remarks could significantly impact U.S.-Ukraine relations. Analysts suggest that his critical stance may signal a shift in American foreign policy, potentially affecting military aid and diplomatic strategies. As Trump navigates his second term, his approach to the Russia-Ukraine war is likely to shape his foreign policy legacy.

Looking Ahead

As geopolitical tensions continue to escalate, all eyes are on President Trump and President Zelenskyy. The international community is closely monitoring how this political dispute will influence the ongoing war in Ukraine, U.S. foreign policy, and global stability.

With Trump positioning himself as a potential mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, his next steps will be crucial in determining the trajectory of the war and the future of U.S.-Ukraine relations. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy remains focused on safeguarding his country’s sovereignty and navigating the complex diplomatic landscape.

In a significant diplomatic development, high-level talks between the United States and Russia commenced on Tuesday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, aimed at ending the ongoing war in Ukraine. Despite Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s (MBS) efforts to include Ukraine in the discussions, both the US and Russia declined the proposal.

The talks followed a telephone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 12, marking a rare direct engagement between the two leaders. The meeting, which lasted approximately four and a half hours, included US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov.

According to Bloomberg, MBS had intended to brief Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the progress made during the talks. However, Zelenskyy, who was scheduled to visit Riyadh on Wednesday, postponed his trip in protest of Ukraine’s exclusion from the meeting.

Zelenskyy expressed his frustration, stating, “Decisions about ending the war in Ukraine cannot be made without Ukraine’s involvement, nor can any conditions be imposed on us.” He added that the exclusion of Ukraine and European countries from the talks was surprising and unacceptable.

The exclusion has also drawn criticism from European nations, with several expressing their discontent over not being included in the discussions. US Secretary of State Rubio, however, asserted that no one was being sidelined and that progress updates were shared with European allies, including France, Germany, the UK, and Italy.

Following the talks, the US and Russia agreed to:

Establish a consultation mechanism to address irritants to their bilateral relationship with the objective of taking steps necessary to normalize the operation of their respective diplomatic missions.

Appoint respective high-level teams to begin working on a path to ending the conflict in Ukraine as soon as possible in a way that is enduring, sustainable, and acceptable to all sides.

Lay the groundwork for future cooperation on matters of mutual geopolitical interest and historic economic and investment opportunities which will emerge from a successful end to the conflict in Ukraine.

The parties to the meeting pledged to remain engaged to ensure the process moves forward in a timely and productive manner.

The controversy comes amid heightened tensions and ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has seen significant international involvement and support for Ukraine from European countries. The outcome of the US-Russia talks and their impact on the broader geopolitical landscape remain to be seen.

The Ukrainian Air Force has carried out missile strikes on a Russian command post in Saky, an occupied region in Crimea. This was reported by Ukrayinska Pravda on Saturday, citing Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk.

Commander Oleshchuk confirmed the missile strikes on Saky and the subsequent destruction of the command post located there. In a statement, he said, “Saky airfield! All targets are down!” This was a clear mockery of Russian news outlets and the Defence Ministry, who frequently claim that their air defence systems down all targets, even in the face of numerous strikes.

Oleshchuk further added, “Unfortunately, our Air Force has lost another command post in Crimea!” Here, he was clearly referring to the Russian and not the Ukrainian Air Force. He concluded his statement by expressing gratitude to the Ukrainian pilots for their excellent work.

On the evening of January 5, various news outlets reported explosions in temporarily occupied Crimea, leading to the Russians blocking the Crimean Bridge. Later, the Russian Ministry of Defence stated that on the night of January 5-6, their air defence systems shot down four air-launched missiles over occupied Crimea.

In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Russian forces launched airstrikes on various Ukrainian cities, including the capital, Kiev, on Friday. The attack comes days after Ukraine struck a Russian warship in the Crimean port of Feodosia.

Vitaliy Klitschko, the mayor of Kiev, reported the explosion on Telegram. At least five other cities in Ukraine, including Kharkiv in the northeast, Lviv in the west, and Odesa in the south, were also targeted by airstrikes, according to city mayors and police.

“The enemy has attacked a peaceful city using S-300 missiles,” said the police in the Kharkiv region. There were ten explosions in Kharkiv, and special services were immediately established in response.

Sumi and Konotop were also reported to have been attacked overnight. In southern Odessa, debris dropped by a drone on a high-rise building caught fire, according to the city’s mayor, Gennady Trukhanov. “As a result of another attack by the enemy, a high-rise building has been damaged,” Trukhanov wrote on social media.

In a recent statement on Twitter, President Zelensky reported that a maternity ward, educational facilities, a shopping mall, multi-story residential buildings and private homes, a commercial storage, and a parking lot in cities including Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia were hit.

“Today, Russia used nearly every type of weapon in its arsenal: ‘Kindzhals,’ S-300s, cruise missiles, and drones. Strategic bombers launched X-101/X-505 missiles. A total of around 110 missiles were fired against Ukraine, with the majority of them being shot down,” Zelensky wrote.

He also mentioned the unfortunate casualties resulting from the strikes, “Unfortunately, there have been fatalities and injuries as a result of the strikes. All services are working around the clock and providing the necessary aid. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I wish a speedy recovery to those injured.”

Zelensky vowed to respond to the attacks, “We will surely respond to terrorist strikes. And we will continue to fight for the security of our entire country, every city, and every citizen. Russian terror must and will lose.”

Ukrainian officials reported that they successfully intercepted and shot down 24 out of the 28 Iranian-made drones launched by Russia towards Kyiv.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that separate residential districts were targeted in the strikes. One drone hit an apartment block in the Solomyanskyi district, sparking a fire that engulfed the upper floors. Emergency crews were promptly dispatched to the scene. The affected apartments are located just a few hundred meters from a maternity hospital.

Damage to apartment buildings was also reported in other parts of the city. On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted signs of a slowdown in Russia’s military planning and action. “We will continue to support their slowdown,” Zelenskyy stated in his nightly video address.

In a separate incident on Thursday, Russian bombs struck near two coal mines in the town of Toretsk, Donetsk region, resulting in three fatalities and at least five civilians injured, according to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.

Ukraine’s military reported that Russian forces launched overnight attacks on multiple regions using 35 drones. The Ukrainian air force stated that all but one of the drones were shot down by the country’s air defenses, including those over Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and other areas. No casualties or ground damage were reported.

In the southern city of Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian shelling resulted in two fatalities. Regional governor Serhiy Lysak reported on social media that an 86-year-old man was hospitalized following the attack. The shelling also caused damage to several homes and farm buildings.

In a recent and escalating development in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Russian Ministry of Defense has reported significant success in countering Ukrainian military operations. According to state news agency TASS, Russian air defense systems have shot down two MiG-29 aircraft, one Su-25, and a staggering 91 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) belonging to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the past 24 hours.

The incidents took place in various locations, including Elizavetovka in the Nikolayev region, and Druzhkovka and Dobropolye in the Donetsk People’s Republic. The Russian military has also claimed the interception of two HIMARS MLRS shells and a JDAM guided munition, showcasing the effectiveness of their air defense capabilities.

Not limited to aerial engagements, the Russian Armed Forces reported successful operations on the ground. The destruction of the command post of the 47th mechanized brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a HIMARS MLRS launcher, and aircraft fuel depots at the Kanatovo airfield in the Kirovograd region and Starokonstantinov in the Khmelnytsky region have been confirmed.

In addition to these achievements, the Russian military asserted that they repelled nine attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kupyansk direction, inflicting substantial losses on the Ukrainian side. The reported casualties include over 50 military personnel, an infantry fighting vehicle, and two armored combat vehicles.

The intensity of the conflict is further underscored by the damage inflicted on Ukrainian artillery. Two Gvozdika self-propelled artillery mounts and two D-30 howitzers were reportedly hit during the confrontations. Additionally, in the Krasny Liman direction, units of the central group of the Russian Armed Forces successfully repelled an attack by a special forces brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

A 10-year-old boy killed and at least 27 others were injured when a Russian missile hit residential buildings in Kharkiv, Ukraine, on Thursday night. The attack came a day after Russia launched a deadly missile strike on a village in the same region, killing 51 civilians.

The Ukrainian authorities said that the missile targeted an apartment complex in the city center, where many families lived. The blast caused a fire that spread to several floors and damaged nearby cars and shops. The boy and his grandmother were trapped in their apartment and died of smoke inhalation, while the injured were taken to hospitals with burns and shrapnel wounds.

The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, visited the scene of the attack and expressed his condolences to the victims’ families. He said that Russia was trying to intimidate Ukraine and its allies with its “cowardly” and “inhumane” attacks on civilians. He called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the situation and demand an end to Russia’s aggression.

Russia has not claimed responsibility for the attack, but has previously accused Ukraine of provoking a war in eastern Ukraine. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and supported separatist rebels in the Donbas region, where more than 13,000 people have been killed since then. A ceasefire agreement was signed in 2015, but it has been repeatedly violated by both sides.

The city of Kharkiv is located near the border with Russia and has been under Ukrainian control since 2014. It is the second-largest city in Ukraine and a major industrial and cultural center. It has also been a target of several terrorist attacks by pro-Russian groups in the past. The latest missile attack has raised fears of a new escalation of violence in the region.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Saturday that it had prevented an attempt by Ukraine to carry out a terrorist attack on targets in Russia’s Belgorod Region using nine rockets from the Uragan multiple launch rocket system (MLRS).

As reported by the Russian news agency Tass, the ministry stated that the rockets were fired from Ukraine’s territory around 3:45 a.m. Moscow time. However, they were successfully intercepted and destroyed by the active air defense systems situated over the Belgorod Region, which shares a border with Ukraine.

No casualties or damage were reported on the Russian side, the ministry said, adding that it had informed the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and other international organizations about the incident.

The ministry accused the Kiev regime of violating the Minsk agreements and the norms of international law, and warned that it would take all necessary measures to ensure the security of its citizens and territory.

The Ukrainian side has not yet commented on the allegations.

The Uragan MLRS is a Soviet-designed self-propelled artillery system that can fire 220 mm rockets with a range of up to 35 km. It can be used to deliver conventional or chemical warheads.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine over the conflict in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists have been fighting against Ukrainian government forces since 2014.

Russia has repeatedly accused Ukraine of preparing for a military offensive in the region, while Ukraine has accused Russia of massing troops and weapons near its border. Both sides have denied the claims.
