A significant ceasefire and hostage release agreement has been reached between Israel and Hamas, raising hopes for a temporary halt to the violence and a pathway to address the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The deal, brokered with the support of international mediators, aims to end weeks of bloodshed, secure the release of hostages, and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to millions of Palestinians in need.

Details of the Agreement

According to officials familiar with the negotiations, the agreement includes a multi-day ceasefire during which Hamas has agreed to release a group of women and children taken hostage during the October 7 attacks. In return, Israel will release several Palestinian women and minors held in its prisons. The ceasefire will also allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza through designated crossings, ensuring that food, water, and medical supplies reach the civilian population.

Reports from Al Jazeera and Reuters indicate that the deal was facilitated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, with extensive behind-the-scenes discussions over the past weeks. A senior U.S. official described the agreement as “a vital step to halt the suffering and open doors to diplomacy.”

Reactions from Global Leaders

Barack Obama

Former U.S. President Barack Obama expressed cautious optimism, stating in a social media post:

“The ceasefire and hostage release deal announced between Israel and Hamas is good news – for the families of the hostages taken on October 7th, for the Palestinian civilians who have suffered for more than a year, and for everyone who has prayed for an end to this awful chapter.

However, no deal – including this one – can ease the pain of those who have lost loved ones or resolve the longstanding conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. That work will be much harder and take much longer. But it will put a stop to the bloodshed, allow people to return to their homes, and get much-needed aid to more than a million desperate, hungry people.”

Obama also praised President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and other global leaders for their diplomatic efforts in securing the agreement.

Joe Biden

U.S. President Joe Biden welcomed the agreement, calling it a testament to the power of diplomacy.

“This deal reflects the hard work of many nations working together to prioritize humanity over hostility. We remain committed to long-term peace and stability in the region,” he said during a press briefing, as reported by The New York Times.

Benjamin Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the agreement as a necessary step to bring hostages back home safely but reiterated Israel’s stance against Hamas.

“Our fight against terrorism is far from over. We will continue to ensure the safety of our people while bringing our captives home,” he said, according to Haaretz.

Antonio Guterres

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the agreement a “crucial lifeline” for Gaza’s struggling population.

“This ceasefire provides a window of opportunity to address urgent humanitarian needs while laying the groundwork for broader peace efforts,” he remarked in a statement released by the UN.

Hamas Spokesperson

A spokesperson for Hamas described the deal as “a step toward exposing the ongoing injustices in Gaza.” According to Al Jazeera, the spokesperson added, “Our priority remains the safety and rights of our people amid Israeli aggression.”

Challenges Ahead

While the agreement has been welcomed as a positive step, experts warn that it is a temporary solution to a long-standing and deeply rooted conflict. Analysts quoted by BBC News emphasized that sustaining the ceasefire and ensuring the terms of the agreement are upheld will require continued international oversight and cooperation.

Furthermore, humanitarian organizations, including the International Red Cross, have highlighted the urgency of expanding aid access, citing that millions in Gaza remain on the brink of starvation and disease due to prolonged blockades and hostilities.

Conclusion

This ceasefire and hostage release agreement, though limited in scope, has brought a glimmer of hope to a region ravaged by conflict and humanitarian crisis. As the international community applauds this breakthrough, leaders stress the need for sustained dialogue and long-term solutions to achieve lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

In a significant development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah during a televised address on Tuesday. The ceasefire aims to bring an end to the year-long conflict that has resulted in substantial casualties and widespread destruction.

The agreement, facilitated with the assistance of the United States, will be presented to the Israeli cabinet for approval later today. Key elements of the deal include an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, along with a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon over the next 60 days. In return, Hezbollah is expected to pull its forces and heavy weaponry back approximately 20 miles from the Israeli border.

Netanyahu emphasized the importance of this ceasefire in stabilizing the region and ending the deadliest conflict in Lebanon since its civil war. “This agreement marks a crucial step towards peace and security for both nations,” he stated.

The international community has welcomed the announcement, expressing hope that this ceasefire will pave the way for lasting peace in the region.

The Israeli army has initiated a targeted operation within the confined area of Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza, citing intelligence that senior Hamas operatives who use the facility to coordinate attacks against Israel are present.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman RADM Hagari stated on Monday morning that the operation was in response to solid intelligence. He emphasized that the campaign’s purpose is to combat Hamas fighters without causing harm to civilians.

“We are aware that senior Hamas fighters have gathered inside Al-Shifa hospital and are using it as a base to launch attacks against Israel,” he said. Hagari assured that measures will be taken with precision and caution to minimize civilian casualties.

The IDF has deployed Arabic speakers and medical personnel to aid patients in the hospital complex and is offering humanitarian assistance to civilians. Despite no obligation for patients and medical personnel to evacuate the hospital, Hagari noted that arrangements are available for citizens who wish to leave.

He urged Hamas fighters to surrender and condemned the use of medical facilities for terrorist activities.

Meanwhile, the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health in Gaza, as reported by Al Jazeera, issued a statement expressing concern about the ongoing Israeli operation.

“We hold the Israeli occupation responsible for the lives of medical staff, patients, and displaced people inside the Al-Shifa Medical Complex,” the statement said. It accused Israel of gross violations of international humanitarian law and fabricating stories to justify the attack on Al-Shifa Medical Complex.

A house in the Al-Daraj neighborhood of Gaza City was attacked by Israeli forces early this morning, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 Palestinians, according to a report by the state-run Palestine TV, as quoted by The Xinhua news agency.

The bodies of the 20 victims, referred to as martyrs, were confirmed to have been recovered by the Palestinian Civil Defense after the bombing, as reported by the news agency. The Al-Daraj neighborhood, a densely populated area in the heart of Gaza City, has been the site of recent clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants.

The Gaza-based Health Ministry updated the Palestinian death toll from the ongoing Israeli attacks on the strip to 23,843. In a press statement, the ministry reported that the Israeli army had killed 135 Palestinians and wounded 312 others in the past 24 hours.

The Lebanese military group Hezbollah claimed responsibility for a barrage of rockets launched from Lebanon towards Mount Meron in northern Israel early Saturday morning. The attack reportedly targeted an Israeli military installation in the area.

The attack was described as an “initial response” to the alleged Israeli killing of Hamas’ deputy chief, Saleh al-Arouri, in Lebanon on Tuesday.

The Mount Meron area in northern Israel was targeted by approximately 40 rockets from Lebanon, according to the Israel Defense Forces as reported by the Times of Israel. In addition, Hezbollah reportedly aimed 62 different types of missiles at an Israeli military installation in the same vicinity.

Israeli media reported explosions near Mount Meron following the sounding of sirens in approximately 90 communities close to the northern border with Lebanon. Videos circulating on social media showed smoke in several areas around Mount Meron. Despite the intensity of the attack, no injuries were reported.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) issued a warning on Saturday about the escalating spread of infectious diseases in the Gaza Strip, a region already grappling with a severe lack of humanitarian aid and its devastating consequences.

The agency’s statement highlighted the recent surge in disease spread, particularly in southern Gaza, where mass displacement has forced many families to relocate multiple times. This situation is putting additional strain on the already overwhelmed Palestinian health system, which is struggling to meet the population’s enormous needs while most hospitals across the strip are non-operational.

According to OCHA, nearly 180,000 people are suffering from upper respiratory infections, and there are 136,400 cases of diarrhoea, half of which are reported among children under the age of five. Additionally, 55,400 people have contracted scabies, 5,330 have chickenpox, 42,700 are suffering from skin rashes, and 126 have been diagnosed with meningitis.

The statement further pointed out that approximately 85 percent of Gaza’s population, or 1.9 million people, have become internally displaced, including those who are frequently forced to move in search of refuge. The lack of food and survival items, coupled with poor hygiene, is exacerbating the already challenging living conditions of the displaced and promoting the spread of diseases.

OCHA also reported that due to significant security incidents near the Kerem Shalom crossing, which was partially reopened on December 17, humanitarian aid through this crossing between Israel and Gaza has been suspended for the past four days. However, on Friday, 81 trucks loaded with food and medicine entered Gaza through the Rafah crossing with Egypt.

Despite these efforts, aid convoys face numerous challenges in their delivery. The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees reported that Israeli forces opened fire on an aid convoy returning from northern Gaza on a route designated by the Israeli army, resulting in damage to one vehicle.

The World Food Programme recently warned that the Palestinian enclave is facing the fifth stage of acute food insecurity, with the risk of famine increasing daily amid escalating conflict and restricted humanitarian access.

As a Palestinian journalist and human rights worker in the Gaza Strip reporting on the impact of Israel’s now two-and-a-half month long war, I am becoming increasingly aware that I may be the next target of an Israeli airstrike.

Since Israel began bombing and laying siege to Gaza on 7 October – launching a ground invasion of the enclave three weeks later – at least 97 journalists have been killed, according to the government press office in Gaza. The Committee to Protect Journalists, an international NGO, puts the number killed in Gaza during the war at 61.

Many of these journalists and media workers were killed while working; but others were killed along with members of their families while they were at home or in the homes where they had taken refuge after being forcibly displaced.

The journalists who have been killed are a small subset of the almost 20,000 people – around 70% of them women and children – who have been killed by Israel’s military campaign in Gaza since 7 October.

I shouldn’t have to say this, but journalists are civilians, and civilians are not supposed to be targeted in military operations: Doing so is a violation of international humanitarian law.

Due to the difficulty of collecting evidence, it may be hard to prove conclusively in many cases that Israel is deliberately targeting journalists. But the sheer number of media workers killed in Gaza appears either to be intentional or to show that the Israeli military is operating with a total disregard for civilian life – or both.

There is also evidence of Israeli forces deliberately targeting journalists; both during the current hostilities – as in the strike on 13 October that killed Lebanese journalist Issam Abdullah – and in the recent past, with the killing of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the West Bank in 2022.

As journalists working during fighting, we wear flak jackets and helmets to clearly identify ourselves as members of the press. This is supposed to be a form of protection, signalling to combatants not to target us. In Gaza, press jackets and helmets are increasingly being seen as a liability. My fellow journalists now sometimes prefer to take them off while reporting in crowded public places, fearing that their visible presence in the area may result in Israel carrying out a strike.

Residents of Gaza are also increasingly afraid of being in the same place as journalists. One recently told me: “Anywhere a journalist is can be targeted.”

Our duty is to shine a light

I’ve lived under Israeli occupation my entire life, and I know that Palestinian journalists have been targeted and killed in Gaza and the West Bank in the past. But I still somehow believed that being a journalist provided me some kind of safety during military attacks. I wanted to believe that when journalists were killed in airstrikes or by sniper’s bullets, they were not the intended target – that their deaths were an accident.

After the past two and a half months, I no longer believe that.

During the second week of the Israeli invasion, I was reporting live for a TV channel from the house where I have taken refuge after being forced to flee my home. I was describing what the situation was like in Gaza and reporting on Israel’s attacks.

If I am killed, I know that there are dozens of journalists who will continue the work. But I also feel I have to fight to continue to be able to work, to keep going, no matter the price.

A few minutes after I finished the interview, I received a call from a relative abroad who had watched it by coincidence. “You know you can be targeted in the house where you are staying, and everyone with you can be killed because of your work?” he asked.

Another foreign colleague later asked me: “How do you feel working in a profession where a fellow journalist is killed every day?”

Despite the danger, and the sense of being a target, journalists in Gaza have continued to cover events on the ground. It is our duty to report on what is happening, especially because Israel and Egypt are not letting international journalists into Gaza except on controlled trips with the Israeli military. Without us, the death, destruction, and suffering caused by Israel’s military campaign and siege would be taking place under the cover of darkness.

We also live the catastrophe

While we continue to do our work – even as we increasingly come to feel that our lives are under threat because of our profession – we are also living the catastrophe in Gaza the same as anyone else.

We feel we might get killed at any moment, or that our families or neighbours might get killed. Every day, every moment, I meet with the idea that I might be killed. In my head, I negotiate with this thought, pleading to have one more day to write one more story or interview one more victim of this war. I feel an immense responsibility to stay alive as long as possible, not just for my own safety, but to remain a voice for all the voiceless people I meet every day.

If I am killed, I know that there are dozens of journalists who will continue the work. But I also feel I have to fight to continue to be able to work, to keep going, no matter the price.

To be a journalist in Gaza is to be both the person who reports on an attack and the victim who witnesses it. You are the reporter who writes about the hundreds of thousands of forcibly displaced people, and you are one of the forcibly displaced people who was forced to flee because your neighbourhood was carpet bombed and your home was destroyed. You are the one who writes about the power outages in Gaza using a paper and pen, taking a picture of your handwritten story to send it via WhatsApp to save your mobile phone’s dwindling battery.

When you cite sources to back up your reports, you are one of the 56% of residents experiencing severe levels of hunger, and one of the 350,000 displaced people – out of 1.9 million in total – suffering from disease and diarrhoea because of the contaminated water and lack of hygiene supplies. And you are one of the 2.3 million residents of this enclave who wish they could be anything but human beings living in Gaza under these inhumane conditions.

The United Nations Security Council convened on Friday to discuss the escalating violence in the Middle East, particularly the conflict in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, and the wider region. The meeting was held against the backdrop of increasing tensions between Israeli settlers and Palestinians, and the ongoing bombardment in Gaza.

Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East at the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA), briefed the Security Council on the situation. He expressed grave concern over the violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank. Khiari also reported on the heightened tensions across the wider Middle East region, including daily fire across the Blue Line of separation between Lebanon and Israel, airstrikes in Syria, and increased tensions in the Red Sea.

Marwan Muasher, Vice President at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Itay Epshtain, Special Advisor at the Norwegian Refugee Council, also briefed the ambassadors. They raised alarm over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza and the potential for further spillover of the conflict.

Members of the Security Council voiced their concern over the impact of the fighting on Palestinian civilians and the escalating tensions in the West Bank. They urged Israel to halt settler violence and hold the perpetrators accountable. Many members emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire to ensure humanitarian access to the affected areas. The importance of a two-State solution was also underscored during the discussion.

The UN Secretary-General voiced grave concerns over the potential for further spillover of the conflict. The international community awaits further developments as the situation continues to unfold.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has donated 80,000 vaccines for measles, mumps, and rubella for children aged up to six years in the Gaza Strip, according to a statement released on Monday by the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) of the Israeli Defense Ministry.

The vaccines, which arrived in the Gaza Strip on December 24, are part of UNICEF’s ongoing efforts to support and facilitate humanitarian and medical initiatives for the people of Gaza.

This donation comes at a critical time. Last week, UNICEF reported that over 80% of children in the Gaza Strip were facing acute food shortages, 90% were experiencing water shortages, and half of the enclave’s sanitation and hygiene facilities were either damaged or destroyed.

The World Health Organization has warned that the spread of infectious diseases in the Gaza Strip is “inevitable” due to the dire sanitary conditions and shortage of clean drinking water.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas has further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis. On October 7, Hamas fired rockets into Israel from the Gaza Strip and breached the border, attacking both civilian neighborhoods and military bases. This resulted in over 1,200 deaths and the abduction of some 240 individuals in Israel.

In response, Israel launched retaliatory strikes, ordered a complete blockade of Gaza, and initiated a ground incursion into the Palestinian enclave with the declared goal of eliminating Hamas fighters and rescuing the hostages. Local authorities report that over 20,400 people have been killed in Gaza as a result of these strikes.

On November 24, Qatar mediated a deal between Israel and Hamas on a temporary truce, the exchange of some prisoners and hostages, and the delivery of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. However, the ceasefire expired on December 1, and over 100 hostages are still being held captive in the Gaza Strip by Hamas, according to Israel.

The arrival of the vaccines is a glimmer of hope amidst the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis. However, the situation remains precarious, and further international intervention and aid are urgently needed.

The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution on the ongoing crisis in Gaza with 13 votes in favor and the US and Russia abstaining. The resolution demands immediate, safe, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance at scale directly to the Palestinian civilian population throughout the Gaza Strip .

The resolution also calls for the release of all hostages immediately and unconditionally and for humanitarian groups to be able to access hostages, including for medical visits. The Council made clear that all parties must respect international humanitarian law and that civilian, humanitarian, and UN facilities, as well as humanitarian personnel and medical personnel, must be protected.

US Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield described the resolution as “a glimmer of hope amongst a sea of unimaginable suffering” and said that since the start of the conflict, the US has worked tirelessly to alleviate the humanitarian crisis, to get lifesaving assistance into Gaza, to get hostages out of the enclave, and to push for the protection of innocent civilians and humanitarian workers, and to work towards a lasting peace. However, she expressed her disappointment that the Council was unable to condemn the terrorist attacks committed by Hamas on 7 October.

The resolution was penned by the UAE and adopted as Resolution 2720 (2023) . The Security Council’s adoption of this resolution is a significant step towards addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and ensuring the protection of innocent civilians and humanitarian workers.
