Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) announced the arrest of a suspect in relation to a shooting incident that occurred in the early hours of August 26, 2023, in Merrifield. The suspect, identified as Jorge Armando Melendez Gonzalez, 25, of Falls Church, was apprehended by the Arlington County SWAT team on Sunday night, after detectives executed a search warrant and collected evidence linking him to the crime.
According to FCPD, Gonzalez approached a group of men who were standing in front of a business in the 7700 block of Lee Highway and opened fire, injuring three men. Two of the victims were found at the scene by officers who responded to a shot persons call at 1:51 a.m. The third victim walked into a hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm at 3:39 a.m. All three victims suffered non-life threatening injuries and were treated and released from the hospital.
Gonzalez fled the scene on foot after the shooting and remained at large until Sunday night, when he was located and arrested by the Arlington County SWAT team with the assistance of FCPD detectives and the Arlington County Robbery and Homicide Unit. Gonzalez has been charged with three counts of felony malicious wounding and three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is being held at the Adult Detention Center on no bond.
FCPD said that the motive for the shooting is still under investigation and asked anyone who may have information about the incident to contact them at 703-246-7800, option 5, or through Crime Solvers. FCPD also said that victim specialists from their Major Crimes Bureau’s Victim Services Division have been assigned to ensure the family of victims are receiving appropriate resources and assistance.
