Super Typhoon is approaching the United States and is spreading rapidly. Meteorologists estimate Guam could be the strongest in more than 20 years, with devastating hurricanes, high winds, rain and flooding.

Keeping this in mind, the authorities have directed residents of non-concrete houses to move to emergency shelters.

The Guam National Weather Service has issued typhoon warnings as well as the island of Rota, about 40 miles northeast of Guam.

The center of Super Typhoon is now southeast of Guam, in a north-northwest direction, forecasters say.

On Tuesday (US Eastern Time), Storm evolved into a “super typhoon,” meaning it endured winds of at least 150 miles per hour. This equates to a strong Category 4 hurricane. Due to its proximity to Guam, meteorologists estimate could reach at least Category 5 strength.

In a statement, Governor Lou Leon Guerrero urged people to remain calm and prepare for Typhoon.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Typhoon Mawar is expected to make landfall in southern Guam around midday on May 24. Given the danger, the governor ordered the National Guard to help evacuate people living in low-lying areas.

The center of the Category 3 storm Tuesday was 195 miles (313.8 km) southeast of Guam and moving northwest at a speed of 9 to 10 miles per hour, according to the weather service. Meteorologists said it was expected to make landfall as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 miles per hour (225 km/h).

Guerrero said in his statement that winds could reach speeds of 150 mph. Typhoon gusts with speeds of 81 to 110 miles per hour are possible through Wednesday morning with heavy local rains of 8 to 15 inches, according to the governor’s office.

In light of the devastating storm, the governor ordered a lockdown of Guam beginning at 1:00 p.m. Today. Also, people living in low-lying areas have been urged to leave their homes before 6 p.m. and move to higher-lying areas. People are stocking up on water, generators, food and essential supplies ahead of the storm. The wooden and tin houses were ordered to disappear as quickly as possible.
