A powerful earthquake struck northeast Afghanistan on Tuesday and tremors were felt in cities in Pakistan and India. This caused a big shock in the neighboring cities of Pakistan and India, according to local media.
The US Geological Survey reported a 6.5 magnitude earthquake. The epicenter of the earthquake was 40 km southeast of the town of Jurm, near the border with Afghanistan, with depth 187.6 km, according to the US Geological Survey.
According to local media in Pakistan, residents fled their homes after houses started shaking in Islamabad. It is reported that the shock of the earthquake was felt all over the country for 30 seconds.
In the northern states of India, including Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu Kashmir and Punjab, people rushed out of their homes after the tremors were felt for a few seconds.
At least five people have died from the strong earthquake: two in Afghanistan and three in Pakistan, the CNN news agency reported.
Complete reports of damage or injuries from the earthquake are yet to be received.
The region is often affected by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which is near the confluence of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
Last year, more than 1,000 people were killed in a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan.
