In a significant update, President Donald Trump announced via social media that two NASA astronauts, Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, are set to return home after an extended mission on the International Space Station (ISS). Their mission, initially planned for eight days, stretched over nine months due to technical complications with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft.

The rescue operation has been spearheaded by SpaceX, with the Crew Dragon spacecraft successfully docking with the ISS. The return journey is scheduled for March 19, 2025, with safety remaining a top priority throughout the mission.

In his statement, President Trump highlighted his involvement in the coordination effort, having spoken with NASA’s Acting Administrator, Janet Petro. According to the statement, Petro emphasized the urgency of the situation, reportedly saying, “Let’s bring them home NOW, Sir!” President Trump also acknowledged the role of Elon Musk in ensuring the mission’s success, praising Musk and SpaceX for their efforts.

While President Trump criticized the previous administration for what he described as “negligence” regarding the astronauts’ prolonged stay, it is essential to note that the delays stemmed from technical issues with the Starliner spacecraft rather than political factors.

The astronauts’ anticipated return marks a long-awaited conclusion to their challenging mission and showcases SpaceX’s capabilities as a reliable partner in human space exploration.
