Washington Nationals’ game with the San Diego Padres was suspended when a shooting occurred outside Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. on Saturday night left three people injured.
The Washington Nationals suspended the game immediately after they learned shooting and announced that the game will resume tomorrow, Sunday, July 18, at 1:05 PM ET.
“Tonight’s game has been suspended in the bottom of the 6th inning due to an incident surrounding National Park, the suspended game will resume beginning at 1.05 OM ET and will be competed as a nine-inning regulation game.” the National announced in a statement.
“Following the conclusion of the suspended game, the regularly scheduled game will begin within 24-45 minutes and will be played as a nine- inning regulation game, “ the National said.
“MPD is responding to a shooting in the 1500 block of South Capitol Street, SW, in which two people where shot outside of Nationals Park. This is currently an active investigation and it appears there is no ongoing threat at this time,” the Metropolitan Police Department said in a tweeted after the incident.
During a news conference Saturday night, city officials said three people had been shot, including a woman who had attended the baseball game.
The woman had left the stadium and was caught in the crossfire. She is expected to recover from her gunshot wounds, the police said.
Christopher Geldart, D.C. Deputy Mayor for Public Safety said at Saturday night’s news conference that the shooting was unrelated to the baseball game or the stadium but that there would be an increased police presence for Sunday’s games.
“We want to make sure fans and our residents know that it is safe to come down here to the game,” Geldart said. “This was an isolated incident that happened outside the ballpark.”
It’s unclear whether the shooter has been taken into custody.
