More than 3,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes in China’s Hunan Province following a deluge of heavy rain that struck the region over the weekend, China Daily reported citing state media agency, Xinhua.

The provincial flood and drought control headquarters reported that the incessant downpour began on Saturday and continued through Sunday, wreaking havoc in central parts of the province.

According to the Chrisis24, the hardest-hit areas are in northwestern Hunan, particularly in the counties of Sangzhi, Shimen, Yongshun, and Zhangjiajie City. In response to the emergency flooding situation, local authorities have launched urgent measures to manage the crisis.

One of the most concerning developments has been the rising water levels along the Lishui River. The Sangzhi station recorded a water level of 259.21 meters, surpassing the alert level by 2.71 meters. This sharp increase of 10.85 meters has posed a significant threat to the safety of communities along the riverbanks.

The impact of the heavy rainfall has been felt acutely in urban and low-lying areas. The county seat of Sangzhi has witnessed severe urban flooding, leading to the submersion of numerous rural residences. The rising waters have also rendered roads alongside the Lishui River impassable, effectively cutting off access to crucial areas. Adding to the chaos, the intense precipitation has caused multiple county and township-level roads to collapse to varying degrees.

Local authorities are working tirelessly to address the situation and provide relief to affected residents. Evacuation efforts are underway, aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of those living in the flood-stricken regions. The challenge remains immense as rescue and recovery teams grapple with the dual challenges of flooding and infrastructure damage.

The torrential rainfall and resulting flooding highlight the vulnerability of regions to extreme weather events. As communities in Hunan Province grapple with the aftermath of this natural disaster, the importance of preparedness and robust disaster response mechanisms becomes more evident than ever.
