(GNB Desk): Former President Trump’s Senate trial began today, weeks after the House voted to impeach him on a single article of inciting insurrection after a mob overran the U.S. Capitol.
The Senate trial of former President Donald Trump on Tuesday started with a debate and voted that the second impeachment trial is constitutional. The trial began with a graphic video of the Capitol riot and proceeded with hours of debate. House made a case showing how rioters violently breached the US Capitol and attacked police officers last month, invoking Trump’s name as they tried to disrupt the certification of the November election.
The lead House prosecutor Rep. Jamie Raskin told senators the case would present “cold, hard facts” against the former president.
House managers and the former president’s lawyers took up to four equally divided hours to make the case for or against the constitutionality of Trump’s second impeachment, followed by a Senate vote that passed in its favor by 56 – 44 votes.
The Senate voted Tuesday, with the backing of all Democrats, two independents and six of the chamber’s 50 Republicans.
The vote, which was expected, clears the path for a week-long proceeding that will kick off Wednesday as with House impeachment managers presenting their case.
