In a move that avoided a government shutdown, the Senate narrowly passed a massive $1.2 trillion spending package early Saturday morning by a vote of 74-24. This comes after heated negotiations caused lawmakers to work past the midnight deadline.
The brief funding lapse is considered technical and had no significant impact. The White House had previously indicated they had ceased preparations for a shutdown after the Senate reached an agreement to consider amendments proposed by Republicans.
The legislation, already approved by the House of Representatives on Friday by a vote of 268-134, now goes to President Biden for his signature. This marks the conclusion of a tumultuous year-long funding process marked by partisan divisions, lengthy negotiations, and temporary spending measures.
Once signed by the President, the package will fully fund the government through September 30th. This comes after Congress previously passed a separate $459 billion spending measure earlier in March, bringing the total fiscal year spending to $1.659 trillion.
