Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin, who recently underwent a medical procedure, faced various complications post-surgery leading to his admission to the Walter Reed Medical Center on Monday. The 70-year-old Defense Minister’s health condition has raised concerns due to the sensitivity of his position, which comes right after the U.S. President in terms of military command.

The White House reportedly did not have information about Austin’s health condition until at least Thursday morning, according to CBS. Questions have been raised about how much Austin will be able to fulfill his responsibilities due to his illness. Deputy Defense Minister Catherine Hix is said to be covering for him during his absence.

CNN reported that Hix was fulfilling her duties while Austin was undergoing treatment, even though she was on vacation in Puerto Rico at the time. On Saturday, President Biden spoke with Defense Secretary Austin and enquired about his well-being. It is reported that President Biden has complete trust in his Defense Secretary and is awaiting his return to the Pentagon.

Austin had previously expressed his gratitude to the medical team at Walter Reed for their exceptional care and personal warmth. He also acknowledged the outpouring of support from colleagues, friends, and family, stating that he and his wife Charlene are deeply touched by the well wishes.

In his statement, Austin also addressed concerns about transparency regarding his health. He acknowledged that he could have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed about his medical procedure and pledged to improve in this regard.

The Republican Party has expressed serious concerns in this matter. Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) has called for Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to address reports claiming that the Department of Defense did not inform President Biden or the National Security Council of Austin’s hospitalization. Cotton emphasizes the importance of immediate communication between the Secretary of Defense and the president, especially in critical moments. He insists that if the report is accurate, there should be repercussions for this significant lapse.

As Austin continues his recovery, his commitment to transparency and responsibility sets a strong example for public officials everywhere. The nation eagerly awaits his return to the Pentagon.
