(GNB, San Diego): Nine great appes in the San Diego Zoo have been vaccinated for the coronavirus after a troop of gorillas tested positive at the Zoo’s Sarari Park.
Four orangutans and five bonobos received COVID-19 injections in January and February, according to the zoo.
The experimental vaccine given to apes developed by Zoetis, a major veterinary pharmaceuticals company.
Three bonobos and a gorilla also are expected to receive the vaccine, and not built nor suitable for human use.
Eight western lowland gorillas got the virus, probably by exposure to a zookeeper who tested positive for COVID-19, officers said.
The gorillas had symptoms ranging from runny noses to coughing and lethargy. But they are recovering, according to the Zoo.
