South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said that North Korea fired a ballistic missile from its east coast toward the sea on Saturday. North Korea’s move comes ahead of joint US-South Korean exercises in Washington next week.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff said, “North Korea fired an unidentified ballistic missile into the East Sea. According to Al Jazeera’s report, Japan’s coast guard also said that North Korea had tested a ballistic missile.” This East Sea is known as the Sea of Japan. A day before this launch, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Korea threatened to take ‘unprecedented’ action against South Korea.
Yonhap news agency quoted the South Korean military as saying that North Korea had launched two medium-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea in December. The Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul said the ballistic missile was fired at around 5:22 p.m. from an area in Sunan, the site of Pyongyang’s international airport. It didn’t immediately say where the weapon landed.
According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missiles were fired at a steep angle and traveled about 500 kilometers. The JCS said intelligence officials from South Korea and the United States are analyzing North Korea’s recent missile activity for other details.
