A state commission has recommended Facebook to pay 300,000 (($256.70) won in compensation to each of 181 South Korean users demanding damages over the platform’s breach of their personal information.

The Personal Information Protection Commission made the recommendation to Meta Platforms on Friday.

It said the company should also disclose which personal data were leaked and to whom.

Last November, the watchdog concluded that Facebook leaked personal data of at least 3.3 million of its total 18 million Korean users to third parties without their consent between May 2012 and June 2018.

The social media giant was fined 6.7 billion won for violating local privacy laws.
Kim Il-hwan, the head of the dispute mediation panel, said they expect Facebook to accept the proposed deal “to fulfill its personal data protection obligations.”

“The decision was made in consideration of the object of the relevant collective dispute mediation system that was adopted to protect the rights of individuals … against giant internet platform companies,” Kim Il-hwan, the head of the dispute mediation panel told Yonhap news agency.

“The panel expects Facebook to accept the proposed deal to fulfill its personal data protection obligations,” it added.
