At least five people, including a ten -year-old child and her mother, have been killed, and 53 others injured in a devastating Russian missile strike on the city of Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine. The city holds significance as it is the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Serhiy Lysak, the head of the Dnipropetrovsk region military administration, confirmed that Russian troops launched two missiles at both a residential building and an educational institution in Kryvyi Rih.
According to the Defense Ministry of Ukraine, among the casualties, five people lost their lives, including a 10-year-old child of . The injured count stands at 53 individuals, including two boys and three girls aged between 4 to 17 years old.
The missile strike resulted in extensive damage to the targeted residential building, with floors 4 to 9 destroyed within one entrance. A fire broke out on the 4th floor, engulfing an area of approximately 70 square meters. However, authorities were able to contain the fire to prevent further damage.
President Zelensky took to Facebook to share a video showing black smoke billowing out of a massive hole torn into the facade of a block of flats. Another non-residential building was also partially destroyed in the attack.
Zelensky expressed his outrage, stating that the Russians are persisting in terrorizing peaceful cities and innocent civilians. He condemned the attack and urged the international community to respond strongly to such acts of aggression.
A search and rescue operation is currently underway to locate survivors and assess the extent of the damage caused by the missile strike. During the rescue efforts, a child born in 2013 was successfully saved.
To offer support and assistance to those affected by the tragic incident, a tent has been set up to provide psychological support to survivors and their families. Additionally, the affected population is being evacuated to ensure their safety.
The situation remains critical as authorities work to extinguish the fires and conduct apartment-by-apartment patrols. The educational institution that was hit by the missile also suffered damage to its 2nd to 4th floors.
