Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced strict measures after US President Joe Biden’s visit to Ukraine. He has also suspended the only remaining nuclear treaty with the US. This treaty was known as ‘New Start Nuclear Treaty’. Putin said that if the US conducts a nuclear weapon test, Russia is ready to do the same.

Actually, this nuclear treaty was agreed upon in 2010 between the two countries. This was the only nuclear treaty left with Russia-America. This too has now been suspended. This treaty was done to limit the strategic nuclear weapons of both the sides.

    What’s in the treaty?

The New START treaty was signed in Prague in 2010. The treaty went into effect the following year and was extended for five years in 2021, just after US President Joe Biden takes office. The treaty limits the number of strategic nuclear weapons that can be deployed by the United States and Russia. Through this, the deployment of land and submarine based missiles and bombers is limited.
