The annual Army 2023 show near Moscow has garnered international attention as Russia proudly displays its array of modern weaponry to potential arms buyers from across the globe. President Vladimir Putin, in a video address during the opening of the event, extended an invitation to countries interested in military cooperation to explore Russia’s “wide selection of modern weapons of all kinds and types.”
In his address, Putin emphasized that Russia is open to collaboration with states seeking to protect their national interests. The offerings include cutting-edge reconnaissance systems, high-precision weaponry, and advanced robotics. Notably, aerial drone technology took center stage, with Putin highlighting its significant role in both military and civilian applications.
Despite these presentations, tensions remain high due to Russia’s ongoing unprovoked conflict with Ukraine. For more than 17 months, the region has been a battleground for Russian military actions, including the use of cruise missiles, rockets, and drones. These attacks have led to the loss of civilian lives and injuries, casting a shadow over Russia’s arms showcase.
Simultaneously, the Russian economy faces considerable challenges stemming from the costs of the prolonged war and the impact of international sanctions. With increased expenses and reduced revenues from oil and gas exports, the nation’s financial stability remains a concern.
The opening of the arms fair, held at Patriot Park near Moscow, was officiated by Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Belarusian counterpart, Viktor Khrenin. Reports from TASS, Russian state media indicate that the event boasts the participation of 1,500 domestic arms companies, showcasing a staggering 28,500 products. Moreover, the presence of 85 foreign companies and organizations from seven countries underscores the global interest in Russia’s military technology.
According to the tass news agency, the Army-2023 International Military-Technical Forum is taking place at the Patriot Congress and Exhibition Center, the Alabino shooting range and the Kubinka airfield on August 14-20.
Notably, Rosoboronexport, Russia’s leading state-owned arms manufacturer and seller, has reportedly secured a contract exceeding $500 million (€457 million) with an undisclosed foreign partner, the dpa news agency repdorted. This early deal showcases the tangible interest in Russia’s weaponry on display at the event.
