In a recent updates, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has reported a disturbing increase in the number of journalists and media workers killed in the escalating conflict between Palestine and Israel. Since the beginning of the conflict’s escalation, at least 36 journalists and media workers have lost their lives.

As of November 3, preliminary investigations by the CPJ have confirmed the deaths of at least 36 journalists and media workers among an estimated 10,000 fatalities since the war began. This includes over 9,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza and the West Bank, and 1,400 deaths in Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has stated that it cannot guarantee the safety of journalists operating in the Gaza Strip. This announcement came after Reuters and Agence France Press news agencies sought assurances that their journalists would not be targeted by Israeli strikes.

Journalists in Gaza are facing particularly high risks due to the Israeli ground assault on Gaza City, devastating airstrikes, disrupted communications, and extensive power outages. As of November 3, the CPJ has reported:

    • 36 confirmed deaths of journalists and media workers: 31 Palestinian, 4 Israeli, and 1 Lebanese.
    • 8 journalists injured.
    • 3 journalists missing.
    • 8 journalists arrested.
    • Multiple instances of assaults, threats, cyberattacks, censorship, and killings of family members.

The CPJ is also investigating numerous unconfirmed reports of other journalists being killed, missing, detained, hurt, or threatened, and of damage to media offices and journalists’ homes.

Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator, emphasized that journalists are civilians doing important work during times of crisis and must not be targeted by warring parties. He highlighted the sacrifices made by journalists across the region, particularly those in Gaza, who have paid an unprecedented toll and face exponential threats.

The CPJ continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding each of these incidents and is committed to ensuring the protection of journalists worldwide.
