With their dolphin-like noses, beaked whales are among the ocean’s most mysterious whale species, and they aren’t usually found near beaches. But, several mysterious and rarely seen beaked whales, especially found in the deep sea, have been spotted near the coast of the Netherlands.

According to the SOS Dolphin Foundation, three beaked whales were found off the coast of the Netherlands on July 19.

According to the foundation, the latest sighting is alarming as it is difficult for deep sea whales to survive in the surface waters of the North Sea.

Beaked whales are a diverse group of 24 unusual and obscure species. They can reach up to 42 feet in length. Beaked whales, which are considered unusual among marine animals, dive to great depths to hunt in the sea.

They can dive to a depth of about 9,000 feet and hold their breath for more than four hours.

According to Rob Deville, project manager for the Zoological Society of London’s Cetacean Stranding Investigation Program (CSIP), many beaked whales wash ashore due to predators and human-made plastic pollution.
