Prakriti Deuja is not your typical pop R&B singer. She is a trailblazer, a history-maker, and a voice for the underrepresented. She is the first Nepalese American to perform at the NBA, various concerts, opening acts, and multiple political events. She is also the first Nepalese woman to be in the running to be a finalist for the WAMMIE’s, the prestigious music award for the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia region.

Prakriti’s journey to music, however, was not a smooth one. She had to overcome many obstacles and challenges along the way. Born and raised in Centreville, VA, in a traditional Nepalese household, Prakriti was the first in her family to pursue a career in the arts. Being a first-generation daughter of immigrants, she faced pressure from her family to follow a more conventional and secure path. She also struggled to find role models and mentors who looked like her and understood her cultural background.
Despite these difficulties, Prakriti never gave up on her passion for music. She realized that music was her true calling after graduating from college, where she studied math. She decided to take a leap of faith and dedicate herself to her craft. She started writing and recording her own songs, drawing inspiration from her personal experiences and emotions.

Prakriti’s talent and hard work soon paid off. She released her debut single, “I’m Sorry,” in 2021, which received positive feedback from listeners and critics alike. The song showcases Prakriti’s sassy lyrics, catchy melodies, and subtle yet strong runs, which have become her signature style. Her second single, “Friends Can Break Your Heart Too,” released in 2023, further cemented her storytelling technique and soulful voice. The song, which blends elements of sad-pop and balladry melodies with an R&B trap beat, explores the theme of friendship breakups and how they can be as painful as romantic ones.

Prakriti’s music has resonated with audiences across the globe, especially in the United States and Nepal, where she has gained a large and loyal fan base.

While Prakriti is proud of her achievements and recognition, she is also aware of her responsibility and mission as an artist. She wants to use her platform to advocate for authenticity and representation, especially for Asian Pacific Islanders (API) and Nepalese artists like herself. She hopes to inspire and empower the next generation of artists who may face similar challenges and doubts as she did. She also wants to celebrate and honor her Nepalese heritage and culture.

Prakriti is looking forward to the next chapter of her life, which promises to be filled with more music and personal growth. She is currently working on new music, which is expected to be released later this year. She is also preparing for the 36th annual Wammie Awards, where she is nominated for Best Pop Song for her recent release, “Friends Can Break Your Heart Too.” She hopes to make history by becoming the first Nepalese woman to win a WAMMIE, which would be a huge milestone for her and her community.

Prakriti invites everyone to support her by voting for her at https://wammiesdc.awardsplatform.com.

Voting is open to everyone, regardless of location, and can be done until January 31, 2024 at 11:59PM. She also encourages everyone to check out her website, www.prakritideuja.com, where they can learn more about her and listen to her music.

Prakriti Deuja is more than just a singer. She is a visionary, a leader, and a role model. She is breaking barriers and making history as a Nepalese American pop R&B singer. She is Prakriti Deuja, and she is here to stay.
