A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia’s eastern province of North Maluku on Friday morning. According to the authorities, there was no loss of life or damage from the earthquake.
The earthquake occurred at 3:20 am. local time Friday with its epicenter located 133 km northwest of the Morotai island district and at a depth of 112 km below sea level, and had not triggered a tsunami, Indonesia’s Meteorological Agency said.
According to the agency, the shock of the earthquake was also felt in the nearby North Sulawesi province.
So far, no buildings or infrastructure have been damaged by the earthquake, Xinhua news agency quoted Abdul Muhari, the spokesperson of the National Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency as saying.
“There are no initial reports of damage or casualties after the earthquake,” the spokesman told Xinhua by phone.
“Residents in the Morotai island district felt the tremors, but they did not panic,” Yusri A. Qasim, head of the emergency unit of the disaster agency in North Maluku province, told Xinhua.
Indonesia is located in an earthquake-prone area known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire”.
