A gun shot has been reported near the residence of US Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday morning. According to media reports, the US Secret Service is investigating reports of a gunshot near the US Naval Observatory on Monday morning.
The US Naval Observatory is home to Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff.
Fox News quoted Secret Service spokesman Lt. Paul Mayhair as saying in a statement that Secret Service officers responded to a report of shots fired at 34th and Massachusetts Avenue at 1:30 a.m. (local time). No injuries have been reported, and there is currently no indication that this incident was directed at a protected individual or the Naval Observatory, Mehair said. He added that the roads around the intersection were temporarily closed due to the investigation.
On Monday morning, officers present at the scene outside the main entrance of the residence inspected the stoplight (light at the intersection), whose upper part was broken. The Secret Service then cleared the scene and surrounding roads were reopened later in the morning and the broken stoplights have resumed operation.
Harris, the first woman and first black Indian-origin Vice President, and her husband Emhoff were not at the residence at the time. Harris is in Los Angeles on Monday as part of her public schedule.
The Naval Observatory is located in the northwest quadrant of Washington DC and is approximately two miles northwest of the White House. NBC News reported that the area is under tight security surveillance by the US Secret Service.
