(GNB Desk)- Former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty Tuesday on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter for the May 2020 killing of George Floyd. Jurors announced their final verdict after approximately 10 hours of deliberation.
Floyd, a Black man, died in police custody on May 25, 2020, after Chauvin pinned his knee against Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes.
Floyd’s death sparked protests in Minneapolis, across the United States, and around the world. It prompted calls for police reform and soul-searching on issues of racial injustice.
Many U.S. lawmakers have expressed approval over the trial outcome and shared their thought on Social media.
