Kathmandu (GNB)- President of the Republic of Nepal Bidya Devi Bhandari has dissolved the House of Representatives of the Federal Parliament and set new dates for the mid-term general election in May 2021.
President Bhandari has announced April 30 for the first phase and May 10 for the second phase of the mid-term election.
Issuing a statement on Sunday, December 20, the Office of the President stated that President has approved the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, stepping on Article 76 (1) and (7) and Article 85 of the constitution.
Earlier on Sunday, an emergency meeting of the Cabinet decided to recommend to the President dissolution of the federal parliament. The decision came in the wake of a deepening crisis within the ruling Nepal Communist Party.
Oli was elected prime minister in February 2018 after the alliance of his CPN-UML and Dahal’s CPN (Maoist Centre) was handed a majority in the 2017 elections. The two parties had merged in May 2018 to form the Nepal Communist Party.
There are two factions clearly observed within the ruling Nepal Communist party- Puspakamal Dahal- Madhav Nepal are leading one team while Prime Minister KP Oli is leading another.
Seven cabinet ministers of the Cabinet have resigned
Following the dissolution of the House of Representatives of the Federal Parliament, seven cabinet ministers submit resignations over PM Oli’s decision to dissolve parliament. All the seven ministers, who belong to the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-Madhav Nepal faction in the ruling Nepal Communist Party.
Protest in Kathmandu demanding their reignition
Both the opposition and factions of the ruling party have taken to the street against the dissolution of the parliament deeming it unconstitutional. The protesters are demanding the resignation of both the PM and the President.
