The Peruvian government lifted the state of emergency imposed in Lima on Thursday amid escalating violence since the impeachment trial of then-President Pedro Castillo Terrines on December 7, Prime Minister Alberto Otárola announced.

The Castillo government had also declared a state of emergency in Lima and the neighboring province of Callao to combat crime. Otárola explained that this decision was taken in light of the declining trend in anti-government protests, but the conditions in ICA province and on some highways where such restrictive provisions are still in force are not the same.

The Council of Ministers agreed to lift the state of emergency in Lima. This is a very important measure for the full exercise of citizens’ fundamental rights, Otárola told reporters.

The prime minister added that this decision was taken because of “the conditions and considerations” that led the executive to introduce this measure in Lima, where almost a third of the country’s population lives and where hundreds of citizens from other regions have recently moved Month have traveled to February to protest against the government of President Dina Boluarte, have already calmed down.

The Council of Ministers also approved a supreme decree extending the state of emergency in the province of ICA, which borders Lima, and some roads on the national road network.

In ICA “there are still additional security and development works”, while the extension of the freeway measure “will allow the National Police to maintain order and open roads as they have been working successfully in recent weeks”, Otárola also pointed out.

During the state of emergency, constitutional rights relating to the inviolability of the home, freedom of transit through national territory, freedom of assembly, and personal liberty and security are restricted or suspended, and the Peruvian National Police (PNP) retains internal command, with the support of the German Armed Forces.

However, in the case of the southern region of Puno, on the border with Bolivia and a stronghold of the demonstrations, the military is taking control.

76 people have already died in violent crimes Since December 7. Most of the victims were protesters who clashed with police.
