TikTok has been restored in Pakistan on Friday as Pakistan’s media agency lifted the ban imposed on the video-sharing app four months ago.
This time, the ban has been lifted on TikTok after four months. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced on Friday.
The development comes as TikTok made assurances that it would control the spread of indecent content.
In October 2020, TikTok was first blocked in Pakistan. The action was taken over complaints about allegedly ‘immoral, obscene and vulgar’ content on the app.
The app has become quite popular among teens and young adults in the country.

The statement from the Authority said: “PTA has restored the services of TikTok on assurances of the Platform to control immoral/indecent content.
“Subsequent to the imposition of the ban on 20 July 2021, PTA remained in communications with the TikTok management.
“As a result of continuous engagement, senior management of the platform assured PTA of its commitment to take necessary measures to control unlawful content in accordance with local laws and societal norms.
“The company also assured that the users who are continuously involved in uploading unlawful content will be blocked from using the platform. Keeping in view the assurances, the Authority has decided to lift the ban on #TikTok forthwith.
“PTA will continue to monitor the platform in order to ensure that unlawful content contrary to Pakistan’s law and societal values is not disseminated.
The app, which is owned by China’s ByteDance, has been downloaded around 39 million times in Pakistan.
Pakistan, which has strong relations with China, has been asking TikTok to come up with an effective mechanism to control unlawful content.
The government had imposed a ban on the Chinese app TikTok on July 20, 2021, with a demand of removing and controlling the immoral content on the app from the administration.
