It is claimed that more than 400 private schools in Afghanistan have been closed. According to the news reported by the local media, the schools were closed due to various reasons, including economic and political.

Zabihullah Furqani, the leader of the organization of private schools, said that because of poverty, unmarried people stopped enrolling their children in private schools.

Similarly, according to the decision of the government, girls are prohibited from going to school from classes 6 to 12, so the number of students has also decreased, says Furqani.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesman of the Taliban government, also stated that the schoolgirl could not be taught due to religious reasons.

The Taliban government has so far been ignoring pressure from rightist and international organizations to let girls go to school.

He said that the decision to prohibit girls from going to school could not be withdrawn due to Muslim laws and Sharia.

After the establishment of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, girls are prohibited from going to school, while women are not allowed to work or walk outside the house alone. Even though voices were raised everywhere against this arrangement, the Taliban administration has been denying it.

Afghanistan has been facing extreme economic problems since the US government froze nearly $10 billion assets of the country’s central bank following the August 2021 Taliban takeover.

According to UNICEF, an estimated 3.7 million children are currently out-of-school in Afghanistan, 60 percent of which are girls.
