In a strategic move to bolster the NATO Kosovo Force (KFOR) and ensure the fulfillment of its UN mandate, more than 130 additional troops from Romania have landed in Kosovo, as announced by NATO on Saturday.
The decision to deploy additional troops comes in the wake of a violent attack on Kosovo Police on 24 September and subsequent increased tensions in the region. The deployments are seen as a prudent step to ensure KFOR has the necessary forces to fulfill its UN mandate. This mandate includes maintaining a safe and secure environment and ensuring freedom of movement for all people in Kosovo.
The deployments were based on a request by NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe and were approved by Allies in the North Atlantic Council.
NATO has been leading a peacekeeping operation in Kosovo since 1999 under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244. The KFOR currently consists of well over 4,500 troops contributed by 27 NATO Allies and partners.
These reinforcements underscore NATO’s commitment to peace and security in the region. The international community will be closely watching the developments in Kosovo as these additional troops begin their mission.
